So, let's jump into your back-to-practice reset: what's actually happening to your skin right now, why fall makes it worse than summer ever did, and a simple checklist to get ahead of it before your first meet.

  2. If you're swimming outdoors for early-season conditioning, apply a water-resistant mineral sunscreen at least 15 minutes before getting wet.

Immediately after practice

  1. Rinse off as soon as you reasonably can - ideally within a few minutes of getting out, not after the ride home. The longer chlorine and chloramines sit on skin, the more they interact with it.
  2. Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water feels good on tired muscles but strips additional oil from already-stressed skin.
  3. Cleanse with a gentle, sulfate-free body wash instead of harsh soap, paying extra attention to skin folds (behind the knees, inner elbows, under suit straps) where chemical residue tends to linger.
